Weekly Writing Tip

... their independent practice.  For example, if you are teaching the paragraph, before putting the students to work, put a rubric on the board to show your expectations.  Here’s a sample:

Paragraph Rubric

  1. Topic Sentence tells One Main Idea:    1  2  3  4  5
  2. Supporting Sentences explain the main idea: 1  2  3  4  5
  3. Closing Sentence brings the paragraph to a close: 1  2  3  4  5
           A.    When students complete the assignment, have them trade papers
and score each other.  This is a great opportunity for peer tutoring
and modeling.  The students give each other feedback, and they
get to see other styles of writing.

           B.    Have them score their own paragraph.  Guide them through the
rubric.  “Did you include a Topic Sentence that tells the one main
idea?”  If they feel the topic sentence is there and they did well,
they can give themselves a “5”.  If they are not satisfied with their
topic sentence, it’s a safe environment to self analyze their own
writing.  This is a powerful learning tool.

           C.  Grade their tests using the same rubric.  If you use rubrics in other
areas of writing, your students will quickly realize that doing well
on the items of the rubric translates to good grades and better
                 writing.
